Shiatsu
Shiatsu is Japanese form of bodywork based on traditional Oriental Medicine. It works by harmonizing the energy of the body ("ki" in Japanese, or "qi" or "chi" in Chinese) through the use of healing touch and massage.
According to traditional Oriental medicine, there are many channels (meridians) through which the body's energy flows. Acupuncture works by inserting needles into specific points on the meridians to remove blockages and bring the body and mind back into harmony. Shiatsu works on the same meridians as acupuncture, and has often been referred to as acupuncture without needles, but shiatsu is much more than just acupressure. Instead of inserting needles into acupuncture points, pressure (or massage) is applied to various parts of the body with the aim of balancing the flow of energy and bringing harmony and healing to the body and mind.
Shiatsu treatments are deeply relaxing, can help wiith a variety of health challenges, and are usually perfomed with the client fully clothed on a futon on the floor.
Shiatsu during pregnancy is a wonderful way for the mother to rest and deeply connect with the energy of her baby, and can help to alleviate some common health challenges such as backache and sleeplessness. During labour, shiatsu can help support the mother emotionally and physically, and often reduces the need for other pain relief.
